Blogging in Photography

While websites are a great way to showcase your work as a photographer, people often forget or are too busy to update them regularly. This can mean that they become quite stagnant over time and might not accurately represent your most recent work as a shooter.

To counter this, some photographers create a blog for their work. This is a great way to attract potential clients and keep followers up to speed with your most recent work in the field.

Photography blogs

Photography blogs can build a personal narrative around your work. This means that potential clients can really get an insight into you as a person as you chat about different aspects of your work and the work of others who inspire you.

Blogs are also great for search engines. A good photography blogger will frequently add interesting content along with their own work. Because search engines like Google love good content, a well-managed and regularly updated blog may get to the top of search rankings.

Remember, photographers are visual people, so a good blog will not only include photography but may include content related to art, architecture, and design that may influence a person’s worldview.

Starting your own blog

Before beginning your blog, it’s a good idea to have a long brainstorming session about the direction you want to take. Do you want it to be a general photography blog? Or one based on fashion photography or portrait photography

This brainstorming is essential because you need to understand who you are blogging for from the very beginning.

Once you have started, you must maintain your blog to a high standard and update it regularly, as there are many fantastic blogs out there that you will have to compete with for viewers’ attention and time.

Content for your blog

Successful bloggers have mastered the art of engaging with their viewers. As blogs take time to read, try to add value for the reader by regularly sharing content that may educate, entertain or inspire.

It’s a good idea to create plenty of content in advance and break it into blocks to be uploaded on a fortnightly or monthly basis. This cuts out the risk of forgetting to post regularly or being too busy to maintain your blog. Also, don’t forget to check your blog daily if people respond to the content or have something to discuss.

Blogging is a great way to keep in contact with people who may like your work, and it’s also a fantastic way to keep you inspired. Who knows, you may even land a couple of big commissions. Happy shooting and blogging!
